Happy Holidays!

HI all,

Wishing you a wonderful time over the holidays. I wish you a peaceful and happy time and that the New Year brings us all joy, peace and happiness.

I am sorry for my lack of posts of late but I had only just got over my illness when my mum fell serious ill and was in hospital for quite a while. She is out now and doing better but it was a very hectic and worrying time.

We look forward to the New year for a time of greater happiness and for all those coping with pain you are amazing and have greater resources within you than you know.

Focus on the things you CAN DO and do not beat yourself up about the rest.

Take control of your back pain, NEVER give up and  keep seeking your solution.

My experience is I needed to ask the right questions, get to the root cause, get educated and take control.

I wish you all the love, joy and happiness you so deserve

Hugs

Slow steps to recovery...

Red rose
I have experienced a bit of poor health of late, I seem to be taking a lot longer to get back to full health than i think i should. Its not back pain but something else I wont bore  you with,  and am in thoughtful mode so  excuse this rather more rambly post than usual.

I recently realised I had forgotten about some of the lessons I learnt when I had back and sciatic pain.  I have been feeling that I should get better quickly and had forgotten that the body needs time to heal. Society places a lot of pressure on us to get better quickly and of course we want to get better and out of pain as fast as possible too...but sometimes nature has its own agenda.

A positive attitude

This is also very important and taking each day at a time. We all get times we are down, even depressed but that does not get us anywhere. Taking positive action and doing and thinking things that are good for us is the way forward to coping with health issues. There are many solutions out there and one of them may be the solution for you -but you wont find it if you are not  out there with a seeking attitude and positive frame. Even sometimes you might have found it and do not do it because you feel too down to take the necessary steps, or it feels too overwhelming maybe.

It is in my experience all natural things we go through if we are in pain. However, try to find something that will trigger you to adopt a positive, seeking attitude and give things a try, seek help and reach out when you need to. There are some wonderful people out there and some solutions to try.

Take small steps and celebrate the small successes.

Bad days come and go  but look for the overall trend. Give yourself a pat on the back when things go well and do not beat yourself up about the things that do not go well. You are seeking, you are trying  that is what is vital. The only time  you need to give yourself a kick is if you give up. NEVER give up!!

And at the end of the day there is nothing like a hug from someone you love; even if no-one is physically there  love you - give yourself a hug- for that its where it all starts. Love yourself enough to take excellent care of you.

And for anyone who needs it - Heres a hug from me {{{HUG}}}

The 7-Day Back Pain Cure

Hi there,

Well I am back after my operation and now feeling much better. Apologies for my long absence but I have something for you today I think you will like very much :)

If you suffer from any type of back, neck or sciatic pain, then you need to go grab a copy of my good friend, Jesse Cannone's new book,
"The 7-Day Back Pain Cure" asap...

Now, I've known Jesse for a long time -you will know if you are a regular reader how much he and Steve Hefferon have helped me with my back issues, and he is known as the "back pain relief guy" because he's helped so many
people to finally get rid of their pain... and over the years, I personally have learned a lot from him...

But his new book is incredible... in it he does what no one else in the medical community does, and that is put together all of the pieces... see, most people when they have back pain usually get treatments that only mask the pain... and even then, the treatments only address the physical symptoms...

In this book he shows you:

- Why traditional treatments always FAIL to deliver lasting relief
- The 7 mistakes that most people make that keep them in pain
- How to identify the real, underlying causes of your pain
- Which treatments work, which ones don't and how to know which is right for you

So if you have ever suffered from back pain, or are currently dealing with it, I highly recommend you grab a copy of his
book now

An Open Letter To Those Without Invisible Disability Or Chronic Illness

Golden retriever dog

Hi there,

At last I found this wonderful letter to share with you;

"An Open Letter To Those Without Invisible Disability Or Chronic Illness "

I had found it some time ago and then lost it again. Now I have linked here so I won't lose it again!

It is all about understanding people who have an illness or disability that is not necessarily obvious. I think that back and sciatic pain can come under that banner heading.

I know from my own experience while some people were understanding of my sciatic and back pain and the effects it had on me-physically and emotionally; others were very dismissive of "back pain" as being anything much to be concerned about...

I wish I could have given those people this letter...

From the site "Not Done Living " :-

Having an invisible disability (ID) and/or invisible chronic illness (ICI) means that many things change. Just because you can’t see the changes doesn’t mean they aren’t real.
Most people don’t understand much about these disabilities/diseases and their effects, and of those that think they know, many are actually mis-informed. In the spirit of informing those who wish to understand …
… These are the things that I would like you to understand about me before you judge me…

Do Muscle Imbalances Cause Back Pain?

A Persons leg

Is it possible that some forms of back pain can be caused or contributed to by other muscles in the body not being in balance?

Back and sciatic pain can be a complex condition and the symptoms are many and varied. One possible cause is that the person may have developed muscle imbalances that lead to eventual back or sciatic pain.

In my situation many things were explored to find the cause of my back and sciatic pain and although some of them gave temporary releif none of them actually gave any long term pain free time or changed my body.

It was not until muscle imbalances were highlighted, then addressed, that I got any relief from the back and sciatic pain.

Of course not every back pain condition is caused by muscle imbalances but it may be useful for you to consider it along with the other possible reasons.

Low back pain sufferers should be offered complementary therapies on the NHS

I like to try to keep an eye on any news relating to back pain when I can.

I was watching TV yesterday when a news article came on to say that National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICA) has backed the use of complementary therapies for people suffering from low back pain. These involve some therapies including acupuncture, massages or exercises on the NHS.

It is the first time the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence has explicitly backed the use of complementary therapies for low back pain.

Some have welcome this but it has been criticised by others.

Hi there,

How are you ? Sometimes we don't always do as well as we might and life gets on top of us a little. Maybe you feel like that sometimes?

Today I found a lovely video and song which I found to be very emotionally uplifting which I invite you to have a look at. The song is by Trail of Stones and I love this lyric

Should You Use Ice or Heat to Treat Back Pain?

Article from The Healthy Back Institute

Ice or heat? Heat or ice? That's probably the most common question asked about treating back pain.

The best way to answer it, I have found, is to explain exactly what ice and heat do and why they help relieve pain. Once you understand the mechanism behind these treatments, you'll be more likely to use them when your own back pain flares up.

The Pain-Spasm Cycle

Let's say you have sciatica. Your piriformis muscle goes into spasm. Your body reacts to this "injury" by sending more white blood cells to the injury site to fight the problem. That means fewer red blood cells go there, which means the injured area is getting less oxygen and nutrients, and waste products aren't being carried away. This causes what's called Secondary Hypoxic Injury. The site is actually injured even more by lack of oxygen (hypoxia).

It may also put the muscle into a pain-spasm cycle. The injury triggers nerves to send signals to the brain, which interprets it as pain. This pain tells the brain to send a signal back to the injured area, which contracts the muscles to close off blood supply to prevent swelling. But this lack of blood supply actually leads to more pain, more swelling and more spasms.

To review: The initial spasm causes pain and swelling, which leads to more injury and further spasms. More pain, more spasms, more pain, more spasms—a vicious cycle. Without treatment, this cycle can last for years. The only way to begin healing the muscle is to break this cycle. That's where ice and heat come into play.

Is What You Eat Keeping You In Back Pain?

Hi There,

I have been looking for information on anti inflammatory advice for a while and have recently come across this very interesting and useful article i wanted to share with you.

Are the foods you are eating keeping you in pain?

By Steve Hefferon, CMT, PTA and co-founder of LoseTheBackPain.com

An Anti-Inflammatory Diet Could Be the Ticket to Feeling Better

When I say the word "inflammation," it's likely to evoke thoughts of painful joints and muscles, swelling, and a loss of mobility. But did you know that recent research shows that chronic inflammation in your body can lead to serious diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, some cancers, and Alzheimer's disease, to name just a few?

The amount of inflammation in your body varies and is dependent on a number of factors - including your activity level, the amount of sleep you get, the degree of stress in your life, and even the foods you eat. What you have to realize is that these factors are cumulative - meaning they build up over time. And the more that any or all of these factors get out of whack, the risk for disease increases.

Early in life, these levels can be so low that you might not even be aware that you have any inflammation in your body. That's because our bodies do a fairly decent job of controlling the inflammation - at least for a while. Then one day you wake up and you're in your 40s and something is just not right. That's when the fear begins to set in, and you think to yourself: What did I do wrong? or What can I do now to help myself?

The first step is to get your C-reactive protein (CRP) levels tested. C-reactive protein is produced by the liver, and the level of CRP rises when there is systemic inflammation in the body. Ask your doctor about this (you may have to demand to have the test done). All it requires is a blood sample that will be evaluated by your doctor. And because diet can play a large role in how much or how little inflammation you have, you may want these levels looked at by a registered dietician who can help you formulate an appropriate eating plan.

If you have pain due to inflammation, you may choose to take the traditional medical path, which includes non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), steroids, and even joint-replacement surgery in extreme cases. The good news is that there are natural ways to fight inflammation without the undesirable side-effects that often result from the treatments listed above.

What You Eat Makes All The Difference

The food we eat is a critical piece of the puzzle when it comes to controlling inflammation. The typical American diet consists of too much fat, tons of sugar, loads of red meat, and a frightening amount of processed foods - all of which are likely to increase inflammation and contribute to obesity, which itself is can cause inflammation. By switching to an anti-inflammatory diet plan consisting of healthy whole foods, you can actually decrease inflammation and ease the pain and discomfort associated with it.

The first step is to avoid processed foods, foods high in sugar, and junk food whenever possible. Instead, choose fresh whole foods, especially anti-inflammatory varieties such as lean proteins, fruits, and vegetables. But choose carefully. Many vegetables and pre-packaged "health" foods can actually work against you. Use this handy list of the best and worst foods for controlling inflammation:

Inflammatory foods
  • Sugar, from any source
  • Processed foods
  • French Fries
  • Fast Foods
  • White bread
  • Pasta
  • Ice Cream
  • Cheddar Cheeses
  • Snack Foods
  • Oils such as vegetable and corn
  • Soda, caffeine and alcohol

In addition to these dietary changes it is also recommended that you:

* Maintain a healthy weight - There is no question that eating healthy is not easy nowadays, whether you're at home or at a restaurant. But at the very least, you must try to decrease your intake of sugars and hydrogenated oils and increase your daily intake of fiber. Ideally, you should be consuming 35 grams of fiber (that is a ton of fiber, but it's worth shooting for).

* Get better sleep - 7 to 9 hours of sleep is a must for optimal health; getting a good night's sleep is key to controlling systemic inflammation.

* Relax more often to lower stress levels - Find time for yourself throughout the day to focus on your breathing and clear the clutter from your mind; learn to stay focused on the most important tasks in your life.

* Exercise on a regular basis - People always ask me: What's the best exercise to do? I always tell them: Do something you like to do and, if your body can tolerate it, aim for 15-20 minutes three times a week.

* Demand to have you CRP levels tested - This simple blood test is the best indicator of the amount of systemic inflammation in your body. Have the levels evaluated by a certified health care provider who can suggest the most appropriate action.

So, if you are in pain and you've made a conscious decision to help yourself get better, then...

Back Care In The Garden

snowdrops
Recently I have been taking advantage of the slightly better weather to get some gardening done. Although I do exercise throughout the winter to keep my back in as good a shape as I can there is no denying that I do less overall exercise.

So when it comes to Spring and I want to do more outside it can come as a bit of a shock to my back! Gardening is one of the things that people said I would never be able to do again with my back condition, but well I proved them to be wrong as I still enjoy my gardening. Yes I am careful with my back and I do step up the back pain exercises and water therapy and Yes I take my time but I still do it :)

So for anyone who is in a similar position you may like to take a look at my site on Back Care In The Garden and tips for watering your garden to do what you love more safely, with a healthier back.

Also I hope you enjoy this picture of my very first snowdrops in the garden, so beautiful!

Ready For A Laugh To Chase The Blues Away?

Hi all!

Well its late January and not my fave time of year for many reasons. Where I live it is dark early- It is freezing cold just now or raining and I long for the odd sunny day we get. Lately I am yearning for signs of Spring.

Even though I rarely get back or sciatic pain now, my back always gives me a little jip this time of year due to the cold. I tense up my muscles in the cold and that always seems to affect my back. If I use a heat pad I find it helps. I also need to step up my lose the back pain exercises again, they sort me out very quickly but I have really let my back care go over the last few months due to family illness which meant I have been under some stress and had little time lately for looking after me and my back.

Anyway...through my experiences, I do now believe that part of back pain is physical and part of it is mental or emotional and I am sure now that if I get down or sick or stressed that I get some twinges. Time for a bit of cheering up!

Adults laugh a lot less than children and people in pain probably have less to be laughing about than most. Yet smiling and laughing are very good for us emotionally and mentally which helps with physical recovery. If you can have a chuckle at something and even temporarily forget about the pain and stress of back pain it can help such a lot.

Looking After Our Childrens Backs?

Well the kids will be going back to school soon after the holidays and they seem to be needing to carry so much around with them now and doing a lot of sitting at computers and also reading and watching TV if my nieces and nephews are typical. They do physical exercise as well of course but does it really matter about their seated posture?

Is it ever too young to start looking after children's backs?

For those of you who have back and sciatic pain now you would not want your child to go through that. I know I would not. I started with back pain from the age of 18 and for many years largely ignored it.

As I got older though it became harder to ignore and then I ended up with major back and sciatic pain & herniated, degenerative discs that was debilitating. Had I known then what I know now I would have tackled it much earlier.

Perhaps now would be a good time to check what your child is spending time sitting on at home and at school. Prevention is far better than cure. Encourage good posture and good habits now and ensure as far as you can that seating is appropriate.

This study is interesting

Happy New Year!

Bridge over a large river

Wishing each and every one of you a Great New Year Ahead!

My wish to you is for a New year filled with the fulfilment of wishes you wish for yourself.

My wish to you is that this is the year you discover relief from your back and sciatic pain, you find what works for you and apply it consistently.

My wish is that you are happy and at peace with yourself, the world and everyone in it.

Here are just a few quotes I find to be inspiring to me.

"With all its sham ,drudgery and broken dreams it is still a beautiful world."

"Nothing will ever be attempted if all possible objections must first be overcome."

"When solving problems, dig at the roots instead of just hacking at the leaves."

"Happiness is like a butterfly; the more you chase it, the more it will elude you, but if you turn your attention to other things, it will come and sit softly on your shoulder..."

"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."

"Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body... but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, martini in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming Woo~Hoo - What a Ride!"

"Life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass,
It's about learning to dance in the rain."

Thank you to everyone who reads my blog and has supported me and lets look forward to a New Year ahead.

With Love and Gentle Hugs
